The Evolutionary Advantage of Primate Masturbation
New research published in the scientific journal Proceedings of The Royal Society B reveals that masturbation, common among primates – including humans – has an evolutionary purpose. Researchers compiled a vast dataset on primate masturbation, finding it to be an ancient trait that likely aids in increasing reproductive success and preventing sexually transmitted infections in males. The study highlights the adaptive nature of this behaviour and sheds light on its significance in the primate kingdom, while the role of female masturbation remains less clear.
