For the first time, Amsterdam-based biomedical companies, academic research institutions, and medical centres are working together under the name of Amsterdam BioMed Cluster. The Amsterdam BioMed Cluster will be officially launched at the BIO 2005 conference in Philadelphia, USA.
The Cluster has been created to optimize access to the most renowned features of the research institutes and medical centers of Amsterdam. The purpose of this cluster is to showcase the expertise, services, and products of the region to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
The Amsterdam Biomed Cluster includes the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), the VUmc and AMC Medical Centres, and 8 dedicated scientific institutes, including the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation, and Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, as well as 42 biotech companies (including spin-offs and local branches of international companies) such as Agendia and Primagen.
The cluster as a whole employs more than 20,000 highly qualified professionals, both in laboratory and clinical research and in management. The Amsterdam BioMed Cluster is actively supported and facilitated by local government and various other organizations, including the Amsterdam Foreign Investment Office, Science Park Amsterdam and AMC Medical Business Park, Business Development Agency, Knowledge Network Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce.
